Trump's Name Stripped from Kennedy Center After Court Order

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump's name has been physically removed from the facade of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, after the iconic performing arts venue was compelled to comply with a judicial ruling — even as the broader legal battle over its renaming continues to play out in court, according to media reports.

Executive Director Matt Floca confirmed that Trump's name had been taken down following a judge's order mandating its removal, media reported Saturday.

Work crews moved swiftly to execute the directive, beginning the dismantling of the signage early Saturday morning — a day after workers had first shrouded the building's exterior with a tarp on Friday.

The removal was triggered by a ruling from US District Judge Christopher Cooper, who determined that only Congress holds the authority to sanction any change to the institution's official name, and ordered all references to Trump to be stripped from both the building and associated materials.

An appeals court declined Friday to grant the Kennedy Center's request to suspend the ruling while legal proceedings remain active, clearing the way for the name removal to proceed, according to the report.

The venue had pushed back against the order, contending that reverting to its original name risked generating public confusion and could jeopardise private donations that had been tied to the renaming.

The dispute traces back to a decision by the Kennedy Center's board of directors to rebrand the venue in honour of Trump and affix his name prominently to the building's exterior.

The legal challenge was spearheaded by Representative Joyce Beatty, who welcomed the name's removal and vowed that advocates would press on in defending the Kennedy Center's original identity and institutional legacy.

The courtroom battle is far from over, with additional legal arguments expected to be heard before the end of the month.
