Thousands Rally in Rome Over Migration Policy Debate
The march was organized by the Remigration and Reconquest Committee, a group advocating legislation that would provide financial assistance for foreign nationals who choose to leave Italy while also encouraging people of Italian descent living abroad to return.
According to reports, the committee's petition has attracted more than 130,000 signatures, comfortably exceeding the 50,000-signature threshold required for a citizen-led proposal to be submitted to parliament for consideration.
Italy has remained a key entry point for migrants traveling across the Mediterranean from North Africa. Since the migration surge that began in 2015, hundreds of thousands have arrived by sea.
Official figures indicate that more than 150,000 migrants reached Italy by sea in 2023, while roughly 66,000 arrivals were recorded in both 2024 and 2025.
A separate demonstration supporting migrant rights also took place in the capital, bringing together left-wing organizations, labor unions, and activists. Participants criticized the anti-migration campaign, arguing that it unfairly targets foreigners and threatens existing rights protections.
Police maintained a significant presence throughout the day to prevent clashes between the opposing groups.
The demonstrations come as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues to balance competing demands on migration policy. While her administration has taken measures aimed at reducing irregular migration, it has also expanded pathways for legal immigration.
